Survival School/Summer School 2020
Updated: Jul 24, 2020
Yesterday we had our first official day of Summer School. We've been working from an awesome Brain Quest workbook for the last few weeks but our supplies finally arrived (thanks COVID!) so we finally started Survival School!
Our first activity for the day was to pack her backpack. We have an empty backpack printout that she draws things that she thinks she will need to survive a blizzard. I was pleasantly surprised with her fantastic choices. She drew a rope, jacket, pants, boots, beanie, water bottle (2), and a stick. Not bad!
After the pack your backpack activity we read a few chapters of "The Blizzard Challenge" then watched an episode of Bear Grylls show on Amazon Prime. I have a funny story about the show.
Sooo....It's been years and years since I've watched his shows. I remember them being graphic but didn't remember it being like what we watched. Ill be honest, there were times I actually covered my daughters eyes. There was a part where he set a trap for a reindeer, caught one and killed it. But not only did he kill it, he stabbed it in the neck (I think) and the reindeer had blood POURING from his neck. Imagine having a garden hose with water coming out of it, it was like that. He then drinks the blood (blood everywhere, all over his face and jacket) then cuts the chest open and takes the heart out and takes a big bite out of it. Thats cool and all and super educational but not something my 4 year old is ready to handle and watch. Cue mom covering Zae's eyes during the whole thing (LOL!) I laughed at myself, I had no idea it would be THAT graphic! She did learn some great skills and tips from the show. Like how he kept moving to keep warm and his blood moving. How you can start a fire, fill a metal cup with snow then put the cup in the fire. When the water is hot shave off some of your meat (the reindeer he killed earlier) and cook it in the water. Oh and how if you have to cross icy water to take all your clothing off and put it in your backpack, keep your backpack dry and don't get dressed until your dry because you don't want your clothes to freeze to you!
After watching the Bear Grylls episode on Amazon Prime, Daddy took over and gave her a quick class on basic first aid. They also put together a first Aid kit! I'll be doing a blog post showing what we put in it and I'll link it HERE when its done.
Here are some items to get you started on survival school! You can get the Curriculum HERE (This isn't sponsored in any way.)
That's really all you need to get started, everything else is extras. In the curriculum theres suggested games, shows, and YouTube videos for you to add to your survival school.
This is the workbook we have been working from and my daughter LOVES it. It comes with an awesome map that your child puts stickers on as they compete the pages.
Thanks for reading about Zae's first day of survival school. I love tracking her education journey and I plan on staying more on top of it since she will be starting TK in the Fall!
I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe during these odd times.
